Here are some helpful strategies to help your child at home.
Reading: Let your child try to decode an unknown word using these strategies:
1. Check the picture
2. Think about the story
3. Get your mouth ready for the first sound
Ask your child questions about what they read.
Have your child retell the story for you.
Have your child identify sight words in the book.
Have your child draw a picture to retell the story, or to identify the problem in the story.
Writing: Have your child think about a topic. They should write a "booklet" about that topic. A booklet is 3 pages. They should stay on topic and use pictures, labels and sentences to write their story. For example-
Topic- farm animals
Page 1- I see a cow (picture should be of a cow and should be labelled)
Page 2- I see a chicken (picture should be of a chicken and should be labelled)
Page 30 I see a horse (picture should be of a horse and should be labelled)
They should spell their sight words correctly (snap words in their folder) but the last word should be spelled phonetically. Tell your child to "write what you hear" and do not just tell them the letters to write. They should say the sound, identify the letter that makes that sound, and then write the letter.
Math: Play the card game war, play chutes and ladders and candy land. Have them count anything, making sure that they count only one object at a time and say only one number each time. We are working to identify and represent numbers from 10-20.
